In 1980 I left the island for about six months and went to NYC, doing solo gigs in the Village and showcases and shit. One time I had this gig in the “Other End” on Bleeker Street and lo and behold, as the people came in, one after another were from KEY WEST! Half of Pacific Orchestra - John, Khan and Rick, Mack and Jamie, Albee and Cindy Tellone and Albee’s mother, and Mark McMillan and Roberto showed up. What a surprise that musta been! I wouldn’t have remembered this except Cindy visited me last year (2006), here where I live on a houseboat in Amsterdam, and told me about it. But they’d all seen my name in the paper and made it over to Bleeker Street that night…very cool.
Later on in the season, I was at Trax listening to Mark McMillan play, and sitting there with Mack and Jamie, on W.72nd, across from the Dakota. That’s when we heard the news John Lennon had been shot, across the street. Me, Mack and Jamie got very drunk and roamed the city streets most of the night singing Beatles’ songs and got pelted with eggs.
That was a night I’ll never forget.
